We’re starting to enter the last phase of our development cycle for 1.8, and so we’ll be focusing on finalizing features, fixing bugs and optimizing the game over the next few weeks as we draw a little closer to something we’d like to eventually consider releasable. Todays snapshot is one such example, bringing (hopefully) some big optimizations to the server and client, a few less bugs to worry about, and a handful of hugs in their place.

Notable Changes:

  • Servers can now customise network compression in server.properties
  • The new block model format for resource packs can be considered stable and ready to use.
  • Enchantments and effects now accept names instead of arbitrary IDs.
  • Alternative (random) block models specified by resource packs can now be disabled in Video Settings.
  • Many optimizations to both the server (including singleplayer) and the client.
  • Less bugs!
  • Compressed space and time.

Fixed Bugs:

  • [Bug MC-1532] – TNT Flashing Graphic when lit looks cut up and faded. / Z-fighting
  • [Bug MC-2990] – Heads, beds, and doors can’t be placed where there is thin snow
  • [Bug MC-8858] – Rain goes through upside-down stairs
  • [Bug MC-13633] – Horse’s jump bar appears even when the horse isn’t saddled yet
  • [Bug MC-16608] – Text Color in Hopper and Brewing Stand GUI changes
  • [Bug MC-18477] – Iron golems can see and attack invisible hostile mobs
  • [Bug MC-23940] – If you sleep in a bed near a transparent block, you can get in the block
  • [Bug MC-36718] – New fragmented sentences in translation
  • [Bug MC-43984] – Normal players can use player selectors
  • [Bug MC-46674] – Tools cant break Packed Ice faster
  • [Bug MC-53022] – Mobs not being targeted by team selector
  • [Bug MC-53166] – Horses do not convert their owner to UUID
  • [Bug MC-55490] – Spawning Cows on Mooshrooms
  • [Bug MC-55515] – sign.edit with §(color) changes the sign color
  • [Bug MC-56251] – “/weather rain” executed when weather is clear sets the weather to thunder
  • [Bug MC-56884] – Negative Color Crosshair when using resource pack
  • [Bug MC-58067] – Smooth & Chiseled Sandstone & Chiseled Quartz has Incorrect Bottom Texture
  • [Bug MC-60035] – Double slabs become seamless
  • [Bug MC-60039] – Server logging broken
  • [Bug MC-60093] – Blacksmith roof slabs oriented wrong
  • [Bug MC-60126] – Pistons retract on placement as if they were powered
  • [Bug MC-60150] – Fence Gates Placed Open
  • [Bug MC-60151] – Redstone repeaters are inverted
  • [Bug MC-60152] – Powered rail, detector rail, and activator rail are flipped when on an east/west slope
  • [Bug MC-60153] – iron door and wood door
  • [Bug MC-60156] – command blocks don’t trigger when dispensed onto a redstone block
  • [Bug MC-60208] – Pumpkin / Melon Seeds fully grown when planted
  • [Bug MC-60297] – Command blocks not redstone updating when placed

Battlefield Hardline – Community’s Most Wanted List

It’s been about a week since the Battlefield Hardline beta has come to a close, and as Steve said last week we want to thank everyone who took part. Even though the beta was just a small taste of the complete package we plan to deliver with Hardline, the amount of feedback we got from players around the world has been incredible and will help ensure we make Hardline a better game when it launches this October.

BFHL_Blog-640x360

That’s why we’re happy to introduce you to the CMW – the Community’s Most Wanted. This is where we will outline some of the fixes and improvements we are making to Battlefield Hardline based on feedback we received during the beta and what we’re hearing from you. Yes, we are listening!

Below are just a few things from the beta that we’ve learned and the changes we’ve already put into the game we play every day here.

1. MOVEMENT:
There was a lot of feedback about slow movement speed and feeling “sluggish”.  We’ve increased player speed by 10%, and players will get a +10% bonus for running with your pistol out.  It feels much faster now!

2. SUPPRESSION:
There were a lot of negative comments about the camera “bounce” when suppressed.  We’ve changed the way suppression works – your aimpoint is no longer affected, but your situational awareness is.

3. SURVIVALIST:
We’ve heard both sides of the argument on the Survivalist gadget, it is pretty polarizing.  Some of you hate it, some of you love it – either way, we agree it was overpowered.  We’ve changed it to revive you at 1 health and auto-inject after 5 seconds.

4. HIGH TENSION – CRANE CAMERA SHAKE:
A number of people called out the camera shake from this event as being too over the top.  We’re tuning this down.

5. HIGH TENSION – STAIRS IN HIGH TENSION BUG:
Stairs in High Tension should no longer pull players into the wall.

6. ELEVATED OBJECTIVES:
We’ve added some feedback to help you find the objective when it’s above or below you.

7. SPECIAL VEHICLES:
We’re working on adding more special drivable vehicles like the Fuel Truck into all maps.  We’re also working on a handbrake for cars.

8. STUCK VEHICLES:
We’re working on the ability to “nudge” vehicles with a melee attack to help get them unstuck or to be able to move past them.  No promises, but the early prototype looks promising!

9. HEAVY VEHICLE DAMAGE:
We’ve added “weak spots” in the rear of the heavily armored vehicles, making it much easier to bring them down!

10. VEHICLE OCCUPANT LIST:
We’re working on adding the Bag Carrier icon to the list of teammates inside your vehicle, so that you can tell when the bag carrier gets in your vehicle.

This dialogue doesn’t end with the beta. We plan on continuing this from now until launch – and beyond. So come back to the site to check in and see the latest CMW lists and to voice your opinion. We will be revealing a ton of new multiplayer details including new maps, new modes, gadgets and our single player campaign – we want to hear your feedback!

Thanks,
Thad Sasser
Lead Multiplayer Designer, Battlefield Hardline

Watch Oxeye make Cobalt in REAL-TIME

CobaltBanner

Hello!

You might have heard about Cobalt – a game about rolling around and shooting fools in slow-mo. It’s being developed by Oxeye Game Studio and published by Mojang. You can buy into the PC/Mac Alpha here or wait for the console release later this year.

But something even more exciting than that is happening right now. Developers Daniel and Pontus are streaming their development so kind internet people like you can watch them craft their masterpiece. You might learn something about Cobalt, games, or something else entirely (doubtful).

Watch Daniel’s stream - he’s accessing the mainframe and making a snowy level

Watch Pontus’ stream - he’s “arting up” a massive flower temple thing

If you’d prefer to hear them talk about their game, watch the first episode of Radio Cobalt.  The presenter guy is super cool.

Thanks for reading!

Battlefield 4 Community Test Environment Update

We released the Battlefield 4 Community Test Environment (CTE) in early May, and have since then made good progress on improving the game together with our fans. In this blog post, we wanted to share some of the things that we’ve been able to achieve thanks to you.

We’ve tested tons of things in the CTE, ranging from general gameplay tweaks to bug fixes. Many hours have been spent by the team watching live streamed gameplay, analyzing telemetry data, and of course, interacting with the players on the forums. It’s been a tremendous help to the team and we thank all those participating.

The CTE is open to all Battlefield 4 Premium members. If you still haven’t had a chance to test it out yet, then please visit the following link to sign up: http://cte.battlelog.com/bf4/

Improving Netcode

Making improvements to the “Netcode” in Battlefield 4 has been a top priority for us. Some of the items we’ve been specifically looking at is how to decrease the feeling of getting killed when behind cover and getting killed without initially seeing a damage indicator. The improvements we did were released in June, and we’re looking at testing out additional fixes during the coming months.

Locker 640

Core Gameplay

The core gameplay initiative has started, and in the first phase, we’re looking at making improvements and fixes related to the new Dragon’s Teeth expansion pack. One of the main items that we wanted to test was the all-new Ballistics Shield, and based on the feedback that we received we made the following changes that’ll make it for the release of Dragon’s Teeth:

Shield bash damage has been tweaked, it is no longer possible to one-hit kill enemies. The Ballistics shield now better matches with the initial design intent
Single tank AP-rounds now kill those carrying the Ballistics Shield, something that previously wasn’t possible.

Battlefield 4 Dragons Teeth Ballistic Shield_WM 640

Rush Tweaks

If you’re a fan of Rush, you’ll want to jump into the CTE and try out the new changes we’re currently testing on the Siege of Shanghai, Zavod 311 and Operation Locker to start. The main focus of these changes has been to increase the balance and flow of the Rush round. Often, this means making it easier for the attackers to tackle certain MCOMs. Some general tweaks have also been made, such as:

• Commander has been removed by default in Rush
• Radar sweep has been reduced around attackers base
Many per map specific changes, MCOM placement and cover passes.

Apart from these bigger initiatives, here are some of the areas of improvements that we will be looking at in the future:

• General Weapon tweaks/balance
 Weapon Suppression tuning
 3P Head-flinch dampening
 Visual recoil ADS tuning
 Vehicle tuning/balance
Game modes: Rush, Continued tweaks to Obliteration Competitive and Conquest small
 HUD improvements and bug fixes

So, for those of you that have joined the CTE, thanks for the continued support in making Battlefield 4 even more fun!  We look forward to seeing you soon on the battlefield.

David Sirland
Battlefield 4 Associate Producer

Thank You for Playing the Beta

As the Battlefield Hardline closed beta comes to an end, we hand over to Steve Papoutsis, VP and GM of Visceral Games, thanking all beta players for their participation.

BFHL_Blog-640x360

The Battlefield Hardline beta is now closed, we want to thank everyone who took part! Running a beta during E3 was definitely something that was hard to pull off, but we did it for two reasons. First, we want your feedback early. We’re listening to it, we’re acting on it and it’s going to help make Hardline a better game when we launch in October. Second, we’re gamers like you. It’s great to hear about games and see games, but we want to play games. And even though it is still early and we have a lot of work left to do, it was important to us that you could see and feel for yourself what we’re doing with Hardline.

But this beta is only the beginning. . .

In the months ahead we’ll be revealing more details about what we’re doing in multiplayer as well as what the team at Visceral is bringing to the singleplayer campaign. As many of you know from previous Visceral games, we have a unique way of telling our stories and engrossing players in our worlds, and Hardline will be no different. We are doing some cool new things in how we present the campaign, similar to what you see when watching episodes of your favorite TV shows. It’s something different and we’re fired up about it. Keep your eyes out for more on this next month.

And, of course, there’s multiplayer, the staple of any Battlefield game. The Battlefield Hardline beta was just a small portion of what is in store. We have plenty of new modes in the game that really play off the cop and criminal theme, as well as the return of fan-favorites. The variety in maps is also something that Battlefield fans have never experienced before, from subterranean grow labs to the streets of Miami, complete with all the vibe and flavor that city has to offer.

If you didn’t get a chance to play the Battlefield Hardline beta this time around don’t worry, we have your back as we’ll be launching another beta this fall on all announced platforms that will showcase more. Stay tuned to hear more later this year.

We have a lot of cool things up our sleeve, but we also have a lot of hard work ahead of us. It’s an electric time all of us here at Visceral, and we’re pumped to tell you more about the game over the months ahead.

Keep the feedback coming, we’re listening and we’ll be responding to it as much as we can.
